This class will place you in a simulated industry writer’s room where you will work collectively with classmates to write an imaginary episode of the hit TV series SPIDER-MAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES.  Under the supervision of the actual producer / showrunner of the iconic series, JOHN SEMPER, you will get a one-of-a-kind, firsthand look at what it really means to work in the animation industry as a writer for hire.  Students will collaborate to build up a story from initial concept through outline and on to script.  Students will be exposed to each part of the TV animation production process, including working with actors, recording the soundtrack, working with artists, etc.

During this writing workshop (4-Nights / 1-Night Per Week / 3-hours per Night), participants will acquire an overall history of TV animation of the action-adventure and superhero genre, along with a detailed survey of the current busy landscape of the animated superhero genre in production today. Mr. Semper will offer you the creative tools to help you hone your craft and gain more traction in your career.  Each workshop will feature surprise industry guest-lecturers from past and present iconic series – schedules permitting.

This is a rare opportunity to gain firsthand experience working with acclaimed animation writer, producer and showrunner, JOHN SEMPER, who has been actively working in the industry for the past forty years.  Aside from his various credits on such classic TV series as SCOOBY DOO, SMURFS, ALVIN AND THE CHIPMUNKS, FRAGGLE ROCK and JAY JAY THE JET PLANE, he is probably best known for his work as writer/story editor on DC/Warner Bros’ STATIC SHOCK, and as head writer, producer, and showrunner for Marvel Films Animation’s SPIDER-MAN: THE ANIMATED SERIES, which was the groundbreaking project that featured the first onscreen appearances of literally dozens of your favorite Marvel characters.  Mr. Semper has co-written episodes for the new Netflix animated series ROBOZUNA and LEGEND QUEST, and he also wrote the first 19 issues of DC’s latest CYBORG comic book “Rebirth” run.  Most recently, he finished co-writing an animated superhero feature film for Warner Bros and the DC Animated Universe featuring prominent DC COMICS superhero characters.
